Organizing and PR Experience

I've been organizing and promoting successful events and projects for many years:

  • I've organized and run the Kirkland Summer Concerts since 2010, including fundraising, booking bands and sound, handling contracts, coordinating poster and flier design and purchase, emcee'ing the events, scheduling and coordinating sponsor booths, finding and organizing volunteers, and running the 16 concerts per summer (two per week - one for children and one for all ages). The concerts cost approximately $20,000 per year.

  • As the volunteer steward for restoration of Cotton Hill Park, I have organized numerous events since 2008, including an Earth Day event attended by 150 people, a two-month all-volunteer trail building project, three Martin Luther King Day of Service events attended by 60-70 people, and numerous work parties. These events involved coordinating with the city and ensuring that there are tools, outhouse, snacks, beverages, volunteers, waiver forms, and signs in place.

  • Organized corporate events for nine years. Planned an annual holiday party for 100+ adults, and an annual family picnic, in addition to many smaller employee events.

  • I've been the lead organizer for events in my neighborhood since 2006, including an annual picnic, a spring egg hunt, and dozens of work parties.

  • Handled all promotions and bookings for two successful bands, including developing publicity materials and websites.

  • Developed a media campaign that increased attendance at a local monthly support group from several people to dozens of people.

  • Raised $20,000 from local businesses two years in a row for the Kirkland concert series.

  • Worked closely with the City of Kirkland to procure funding for a dozen sidewalk, park, and landscaping projects in my neighborhood.

About Karen

Born and raised near Bellevue, Washington, Karen spent her formative years roaming the wooded streams and hills of what is now Cougar Mountain Regional Park. She studied Ecology at Evergreen State College, worked on the Cedar River Watershed forestry, fire suppression, and road crews, and traveled solo in Europe for a year before getting her degree in Environmental Studies from Western Washington University.

She spent two years in the Peace Corps in Togo, West Africa, working on appropriate technology projects involving wood-saving cookstoves and water cisterns. Since her return in 1988, she has made her home in Kirkland, Washington, where she raised two boys, now both in college, and helped raise two stepchildren, now grown as well.

She speaks French and Spanish, and her travels have taken her to Europe, Africa, Turkey, Mexico, and around the U.S. She loves to birdwatch, hike, cook, garden, read non-fiction, watch documentaries, and cross country ski.

Karen has always been active in her local community, and is respected as a dynamic and diplomatic community leader. She is currently the volunteer steward for restoration of Cotton Hill Park, the chair of her neighborhood association, organizer of the Kirkland Summer Concert Series, and the neighborhoods representative on the Kirkland Chamber of Commerce board.

She has over 25 years' experience organizing and publicizing successful community events. She also sings in a bluegrass and swing band, Back Burner and in a piano jazz duo.

In her 23-year technical writing career she worked in the semiconductor, telecommunications, and metrology industries. She is now a freelance writer available to help businesses, individuals, and non-profits with writing, editing, web content, brochures, reports, proposals, books, grants, press releases, resumes, cover letters, memoirs, essays, and articles.

She is also pursuing opportunities for short-term travel to the third world as a consultant for non-profits of any size.
